Northstar

Marshall "Northstar" Pampkin II is a director, writer, and the founding filmmaker of Outlaw Poet Digital Films (OPDF), a Colorado Springs-based collective built on the principle that stories worth telling do not need permission from the traditional gatekeeping system. A disabled veteran of the U.S. Army (1998-2015) and a graduate of Full Sail University's Digital Cinematography program, Northstar brings the same discipline and team-first mentality he learned in service to his work behind the camera and on the page.

His creative career began in the spoken word and performance scene. He began performing and hosting in 1999 - nearly three decades of live stage work that began with the Java Expressions Series, which included Java Expressions (1999-2006 and 2013-2017), Java Jams (2001-2006 and 2013-2017), Java Expressions: LIVE (2014-2018), and Java Expressions: Acoustically Speaking (2014-2017). He released his first spoken word album in 2006, and over that same span built a career as an event emcee and live-stream producer for music and poetry events. That background taught him that rhythm, breath, and silence are as much a director's tools as the camera itself. He is not interested in spectacle for its own sake; he is interested in the quiet dread of a room where no one will say what everyone is thinking, the institutional weight of a space designed to process people rather than see them, and the horror of recognizing yourself in a character who has done something unforgivable.

Northstar is currently in development on The Price of Staying, a psychological horror feature adapted from the novel by Ellie Burdg. His prior credits include the narrative shorts Lucky Day (2026 Kick Ass Film Fest Season 6, 72-Hour Short Film Challenge) and You (Film Score Fest 2026), as well as Nonstarter (2022), America's Storyteller-Sculptor: Michael Garman and Magic Town (2022), and the music video Journey (2014).

On this blog, he writes about the craft, logistics, and philosophy of independent filmmaking. He approaches film as a collaborative act of attention, and his goal as a writer-director is to create the conditions where that attention can be directed with intention. He believes the stories that stay with us are the ones that make us uncomfortable in the right way - the ones that hold up a mirror we did not ask for and show us something true about power, isolation, and what people do when the systems around them fail. Independent film, in his view, is not a stepping stone to something else. It is a valid, sustainable path for storytellers who would rather build the door than wait for someone to open it.
